🌎Happy World Habitat Day from the Devon Environment Foundation!

Today, we celebrate the incredible diversity of habitats across Devon and beyond, and the vital role they play in sustaining life.

In honour of this, we’re pleased to share a positive update on our Wetland Habitat Fundraiser. With the help of our wonderful supporters, we’ve raised £17,710 so far! To reach our target, we have £2,240 remaining, and we’ve extended the fundraiser the 18th October.

Opportunity to make a big difference for nature by helping to kickstart a new wildlife hotspot on the River Exe!

This summer, we’ve been fundraising to be able to support the start-up costs of the new Washfield Wetland site - a collaboration of local farmers and landowners who have come together to create a haven for wildlife in Lower Washfield, near Tiverton in Mid Devon.

The creation of an extensive new wetland habitat will dramatically increase local biodiversity whilst improving river water quality, reducing soil run-off, and reducing flooding at key sites downstream, including Tiverton High School and Tiverton Hospital.

DEF needs to raise £19,950 by 30th September 2024 in order to support this inspiring Wildlife Recovery and Natural Flood Management project.

According to @devonwildlifetrust Beavers bring amazing benefits to Devon!

Some examples from their website are…

“🌱 Reducing impacts of flooding downstream by engineering pools and canals that hold water and release it slowly back into the watercourse.

🌱 Creating wetland habitats that increase diversity and abundance of wildlife including amphibians, aquatic insects, water voles and wetland birds.

🌱 Increasing biomass of fish in rivers: beaver dams provide space for juvenile fish to shelter and feed.

🌱 Improving water quality: beaver dams trap silt that has been washed off the land, including soil that has been treated with chemical fertilizer. Water is cleaner after passing through a beaver dam.

🌱 Encouraging wildlife tourism and increasing people’s appreciation for - and engagement with – the natural world.”
